Krzywy Las

The Crooked Forest near Nowe Czarnowo in the Suwałki region is one of Poland's most mystical sites. 400 pines growing parallel but all bent at an improbable 90-degree angle at the base, then straightening upward.

Planted in 1930, the strange deformation occurs ONLY in these specific pines on 0.4 ha. Surrounding normal pines behave normally.

Theories: mechanical bending of young trees (for furniture? for shipbuilding?), unknown gardener technique, magnetic anomalies, paranormal. Most scientific: deliberate tree modification by gardeners from Kraków for boat production (WWII interrupted the program).

Free entry. Marked parking. 200 m path to forest.
