The Elbląg Canal is an outstanding 19th-century engineering masterpiece — 84 km waterway with 5 dry inclined planes overcoming 99 m elevation. Ships are transported on special trolleys along railway tracks.
Built 1844-1860 by Georg Steenke. Unique on world scale — the second such system is the Morris Canal in the USA. Inclines: Buczyniec, Kąty, Oleśnica, Jelenie, Całuny.
Passenger boat Ostróda-Elbląg 11 hours. Can also do a 3-hour segment. Price 90-150 PLN.
UNESCO candidate. Listed as Polish Monument of History.
